What Can You Organize In a Day?

If you had a day to yourself and could organize anything you wanted in your house, what would you choose?

Have you suddenly found yourself with a day free to be able to tackle some of your home organizing projects?  Maybe the kids just went back to school, or everyone went to Grandma and Grandpa’s for the weekend. Whatever it was that gave you this day, don’t question it!  If you have the chance and the drive to spend a day on your home organizing projects, consider one of the following options to get the ball rolling.

ORGANIZE YOUR KITCHEN IN A DAY

Ok, so maybe the whole kitchen is not something to organize in a day, but you can definitely knock out a few projects in the kitchen. Kitchen organizing is a fun way to make a big impact on your family’s days.

  • Spend your time going through each cabinet and evaluating the items inside.

  • Group like items together to see if you end up with any duplicates or triplicates.

  • Start a donation pile – and don’t be afraid to throw things away that have outlived their usefulness.

  • Tackle that junk drawer! Cleaning out your junk drawer should only take an hour, leaving you plenty of time to think about your pantry or spice cabinet.

  • Clear off the dining room table. So many dining room tables become file storage, office space, homework space and more – anything but an eating space. But studies have shown that having a family meal together around a table can have a positive impact on the whole family.

It’s common in the kitchen, where there are so many cool gadgets that are easy to lose, to end up with multiples.

WHAT CAN YOU ORGANIZE IN DAY?

If you get a day with no kids at home, one of the best things you can organize in a day is their rooms or playroom. If you have children, you know that their clothing, toy, and book collections seem to grow just as quickly as the kids themselves do. To be able to find a day or two once a year to organizing your kids’ rooms is essential. It’s a great time to pull together a big donation pile. Consider adding:

  • Toys that your kids no longer play with.

  • Clothing they have grown out of that is just taking up space in the closet

  • Old schoolwork and papers they don’t need anymore.

This time of year, it is a great time to get these spaces cleaned out before the holidays arrive and they’re filled back up again with new clothes and toys. If you have older kids, cleaning out their spaces when they’re not around isn’t necessarily the best idea; it might be better in that case to encourage your kids to be a part of the process so that they can learn organizing skills as they grow.

CLOSET ORGANIZING DAY

Cleaning out a few closets can also make a big impact on daily life. While you might be tempted to tackle your own closet, that might end up being more than a daylong project, so don’t start there if you’re hoping to get more accomplished. Do you want to know what makes great organize in a day closet projects? Hall closets. Coat closets. Bathroom closets.

Hall closets and coat closets especially are spaces end up being really convenient for quick stashes, and also have a built in door for hiding what’s within the space – so they end up being a catch-all. Getting these spaces organized in your day alone can really change the way your mornings go. Just think how much easier it will be to get out the door when everyone can find their coats and jackets, shoes and boots, and umbrellas! An organized coat closet can streamline your family’s morning routine by making it easy for everyone to find what they need.

OTHER ORGANIZE IN A DAY PROJECTS TO CONSIDER

The holidays are just around the corner, so there are a multitude of organizing projects you can consider that will have you better prepared for the holiday season. Here are some to consider:

Guest Rooms

If you’re having guests for the holidays, it’s a great time to get the room spruced up and ready for company. Take a peek in the closet – it’s likely to have become a hidden storage unit while you weren’t looking. Double-check the sheets and guest towels to make sure you don’t need to buy new ones.

Holiday Décor

From Halloween through St. Patrick’s Day, some of us are swapping out decorations almost monthly. It’s a great time to make sure you have everything you need to transform your home for each celebration and sort through what you have that might need replaced. There has been a shortage this year of holiday decorations, so assessing your situation early can help ensure that you get what you need.

Seasonal Clothing

This time of year, you may still be reaching for shorts and tank tops, but you’re not far from needing winter coats and boots. It’s a good time to make sure those things are still in good repair, and for the kids, that they still fit well.

If you have a day to yourself and you don’t need to just rest and recharge and enjoy the day, it’s a great time to think about tackling some organize-in-a-day projects that will make back to school, back to holidays, and back to hosting guests even easier to manage.

FINDING BALANCE

While we love inspiring you with ideas about what you can do with a day off, we also love the idea of balance. That means maybe you do a small project and then curl up with a good book and a glass of wine. Or maybe you invite a friend, and you knock out a project at your house and then move to hers and help with a day project there. No matter what you decide to do with your free day, keep these ideas in mind for future organizing projects.

Happy Organizing!
