Fall Reset: Organize Like You’re Headed Back to School

As kids, our lives are centered around the school year and the changes in routine it brings. Every fall you clean out your closet, organize your day-to-day tools, and fall back into an organized and (ideally) balanced schedule. Although adulthood no longer brings back-to-school changes, you can still use the change in season to start fresh with a fall reset. Rather than waiting for January 1st, you can set new goals and achieve old ones with a timeline you create for yourself.

Your Fall Reset Schedule

Just as the school year gives students new classes to take and material to learn, you can create your own routine that allows you to achieve your goals. Looking to start a new workout routine? Work it into your daily schedule. Want to declutter your house? Pick a room each weekend and set aside the time to get it done. Setting aside consistent time towards your goals and having a routine you can follow can help you get into a new mindset more geared towards new beginnings.

Gather Your Fall Reset Tools

Before every school year, you have to gather your school supplies and tools you need for class. The same goes for setting new goals and routines! Once you’ve decided on your goals, look at what tools you need to achieve them. This could be physical tools, such as weights or a planner, but it could also be something non-physical, like having an accountability buddy or changing something about your schedule. Giving yourself the tools and support you need to reach your goals will help you feel more prepared to make this change in your life.

Out With the Old, In with the New

Part of the excitement of a new school year is all the new ways to express yourself - new clothes, new backpacks, and new decorations for your locker. You get rid of what no longer serves you and come back shining as your new self. While you might not invest as much into your lifestyle change as you would during back-to-school shopping, you can still take the ideas and lean into the potential. Give yourself the space to go through what you have and do a closet overhaul. Often, you find things that you haven’t touched in months or years! You can do this for one room or your whole house but taking the time to go through what you own and really evaluate if it’s still something you use and want can make a huge difference in your space. Once you’ve done this, you can recycle or donate what you no longer want and embrace the space you now have to let the new you shine through!

Give Yourself Time to Adjust

A new routine can be difficult to adjust to, no matter what age you are. There will always be an adjustment period, and you might come across unexpected difficulty as you navigate your new routines and start intentionally setting goals. It’s okay if things don’t go the way you want them to all at once, or if you find yourself falling back into old routines. It happens to everyone! The important thing is to get back up when you find yourself sliding. Remember why you decided to set these goals in the first place and hold yourself accountable on this journey. Build in extra time to adjust and prepare for this new circumstance, and you’ll find that your new routine is now your new normal in no time.

Back to school doesn’t just belong to kids. Fall reset energy is something that everyone can take advantage of. Using the new season and “new year” as a reset for yourself can get you motivated to reach your goals. Why put it off till January? Follow the tips you’d give to any student, and you’ll be on your new journey in no time.
