With the New Year right around the corner, it means that soon it will be time to take down your holiday decorations. They made your house a home for family and brought cheer to the season, but the time is close by for them to hide away for another year. Reward them for their hard work by taking a bit of extra time this year to place them back in storage in a safe, organized way. See below for Organizing Maniac’s top 3 tips for household holiday decoration storage.
- Remove batteries decorations. Why? Because even though it may seem like a hassle, storing decorations with batteries in them increases the rate at which the battery charge drains and also increases the chance of corrosion. Instead, remove batteries, place them in a storage bag and tape them to their corresponding decoration. Trust us, your future self will thank you for this extra time.
- Keep your categories. It is nowhere near as fun to put away decorations as it is to put them out. However, keeping items stored in an organized way will help you next year. If you store items by room, stick with this. If you store them by decoration type, stick with that plan. Don’t be tempted to just throw everything in a box and deal with it next holiday season.
- Reevaluate your stock. When putting away decorations, check out the items that never made it out of storage. Are these pieces that should be donated or given to family members? How many years have gone by with them not making it out into the house? Free up some storage space by lightening up on decorations you may have once loved but no longer enjoy or those that never fit your style to begin with.
Wishing you and your family a very happy (and organized) holiday season!
