Autumn is normally a time when we’re celebrating – the kids are back in school, the holidays are coming, the weather is better, and pumpkin-flavored everything is in the stores. We’re usually not thinking about hurricane relief efforts.
This year, it’s more difficult to celebrate, since so many people here and around the world are suffering from the recent devastating hurricanes and forest fires. Most of the Northwest, British Columbia, and Montana have been in a losing battle against fast-moving fires. Montana is only now seeing some relief thanks to snow.
As the fires continue to burn in the north, Hurricane Harvey hit Texas, leaving Houston and the surrounding area reeling from the unexpected force and flooding from the storm. Then, Hurricane Irma swept through and decimated the Caribbean. You have all probably also seen the utter devastation of St. John, USVI in photos, since the island received a direct hit when the Irma was still a Category 5 hurricane. The entire island looks like a bomb dropped on it, and the lush vegetation is now stripped bare. Many permanent residents in the Virgin Islands and surrounding areas have suffered complete loss of their primary homes and livelihood.
It is going to take a very long time for all of these areas to recover, and being an island they have the additional challenge of getting supplies in. The military has arrived to help restore order and begin clearing roads, but as you can imagine, the residents need everything. It will be some time before they even get power.
Now, there is another hurricane (Maria) approaching the islands, and yesterday, Mexico suffered a huge earthquake.
It can seem overwhelming to think about, but that’s why it’s important to do what we can to help. We’ve rounded up some ways to help the different areas from people who know them best.
